The Kentucky Derby — Backside Part 1

It’s taken me forever to finally sort through my Derby week photos I shot for Business First of Louisville. Below, you’ll see a snippet of some of my favorite backside photos. You never realize what goes on and gets accomplished in the wee hours in the morning until you get out of bed at 4:30 a.m., throw on some paddock boots and head to Churchill Downs.

Michelle Obama!

While the media wasn’t allowed inside the Obama campaign reception at the African American Heritage Center in downtown Louisville last week, I was able to snap a few pics of my favorite FLOTUS. I didn’t want to risk getting my camera confiscated, so I packed my smallest 50 mm lens. Give and take. The take was the lack of zoom. Nevertheless, I captured some cool crowd shots.

A Visit to Ashland: The Henry Clay Estate

A couple of weeks ago, I visited my dear friend Sarah in Lexington, Ky. As a teaching assistant at the University of Kentucky’s French department, Sarah is often referred to by her students as an unassuming European model. You shall see why with all of her gorgeous expressions, posing and fashion (Need that J. Crew pea coat she’s wearing!). We walked across the road from her house to the Henry Clay Estate. While I neglected to snap photos of a group of high schoolers playing Quidditch, here is a collection of images that I did manage to get.

Whiskey or Butterscotch?

Meet Scotch, our new goldendoodle pup. I named Scotch after Butterscotch. Jordan named Scotch after Scotch whiskey. Take your pick.

Four Feet And A Nose

We’re getting a dog, hopefully! A Goldendoodle, to be precise. Let’s call her Jane Dog, since we don’t know her current name or if we are going to change it. She currently belongs to my mom’s friend, who is a service dog trainer. We would get the one-year-old Jane Dog for free, and more than likely keep her during her pregnancy — a requirement of the deal if she checks out healthy at her physical this week. Ten days before her due date, dog trainer lady takes Jane Dog and keeps her during nursing of puppies, which, depending on who gets the pups, may grow up to by future service dogs. We would then get Jane Dog back. Here’s a list of all the things I have planned for Jane Dog.
1. Rename her Olive.
2. Walk her four times a day to and fro Cherokee Park.
3. Act as the third photo subject in our Spring engagement photo session to be taken in the Spring.
4. Pet her.
5. Love her.
6. Act as the canine flower girl in our wedding.

Below, are a few of my fav dog picks I’ve recently taken:

A Recap

A lot has happened in the last three weeks. I got engaged, Christmas has come and gone and we signed a lease for a new apartment in Louisville. How did Jordan propose, everyone has been asking. Here’s the quick and dirty:

Set the scene: Walking in front door.

Jordan: Hey, How was your day?

Whitney: Pretty good.

Jordan: Who are these presents for under the tree?

Whitney: We’ve already gone over that.

Jordan: No, come here. Look at this one. Who is this one for?

Whitney: Uh, I do not know.

Jordan: You should open it

Whitney opens small ring box.

Whitney: Ah!

Jordan: Do you like it?

Whitney: Yes.

Jordan: So, uh, you want to marry me?

The end.

Whitney: Yes.

So, in a nutshell the proposal was a frill-free event. Which is pretty much like us.

We (this includes myself, my mom and dad, and does not include Jordan, who prefers to avoid any girly-like activity) picked out the venue. The wedding is going to be at the Peterson Dumesnil House in the Highlands on September 15. In terms of wedding planning, Jordan often reprehends for wasting away about four hours each night surfing wedding blogs and Pintrest. But, hey, I’m a girl. I can’t help it. Below, I’ve posted some photos from over the last few weeks — some of the pups; some of food; and some of just Christmastime fun.
